Universal 3.0 vs 4.0 vs 5.0: Which Generation Is Yours
Every generation was supposed to replace the one before it. None of them did.
Ten years in, I sell all three, and that is not a catalogue strategy. It is what the orders told me. The 4.0 carries the largest tool set I have ever machined — eighty functions in a credit card — and it did not kill the 3.0. People kept buying the older card, with fewer tools, at a similar price, on purpose.
This article is what I understood from that.
01What actually changed, generation to generation

02What the 3.0 got right, and I did not see it at the time
The Universal 3.0 shipped after two years of prototyping with a hardened edge machined straight into the card — a cutting edge of about 50 mm, 52–54 HRC in steel. Slot it into the modular handle and it becomes something close to a small kukri, which sounds like marketing right up until you have actually cut a branch with one.
Sixty functions. A full measuring set, wrenches in both systems, spoke keys, sundial, drill gauge. And the edge.
At the time I filed all of that under features. The market would spend the next four years explaining to me, one order at a time, which line on that list was the actual product.
03The 4.0, and the mistake inside it
The Universal 4.0 was supposed to be the final answer. Eighty functions — the most MRF has ever put on one card. A moon-phase calendar and an earth-parallel meter that no other maker puts on a card. And a completely bladeless body, so the base card walks through airport security with all eighty functions in your wallet.
I was solving a real problem. I had read a lot of comments from people who lost gear at a checkpoint. The TSA rules are brutal about blades — any length, no exceptions — and a bladeless card that clears security is a legitimately good idea.
It is a legitimately good idea for people who fly every week.
Most of my customers fly two or three times a year. The other three hundred and sixty days they open cardboard boxes, and I had built them a card whose blade lives in a separate insert, in a drawer, at home. Their Amazon delivery does not care that the Cut Tool is TSA-removable. It cares whether there is an edge on the card right now.
So they bought the 3.0. Fewer tools, older generation, still available, has an edge. For four years the market told me the same thing every month, in the only language that is not an opinion.
About the earth-parallel meter
Two years of work went into the navigation set on the 4.0, and part of it is a function almost nobody has ever asked about. I can count the people who have written to me about the earth-parallel meter, and the number is one. He was delighted, and I remember him clearly, because he is half the user base.
The other half is me.
That is not a complaint, it is a measurement — and I did not take it seriously until I had to decide what to remove. It stayed anyway â the 5.0 carries the parallel guide too; the trainer below is the cheapest way to find out whether you are the third user.

04Why the 5.0 has seventy functions and not ninety
We could have done ninety. The Universal 5.0 has ten fewer functions than the 4.0, and every one of them was removed on purpose.
The card is 85 × 55 mm — 4 675 mm² — and it does not grow. At eighty functions each one gets an average of 58 mm² of card. At seventy, it gets 67 — fourteen percent more room per function, and that room is exactly what a serrated edge, a hatchet grind and a real Phillips need.
Everything on that card is a trade against everything else. The only way to add a function to a full card is to delete one, and the real question is not how many can I fit but which ten does nobody use.

05The serrated edge, and why cardboard is the enemy
The main edge on the 5.0 is serrated, and that is not a styling choice.
What an urban carry actually cuts is packaging. Corrugated cardboard is a hostile material for an edge — it carries clay fillers from the coating, adhesive along every flute, and in recycled board a certain amount of grit that never left the pulp. You are not cutting paper. You are cutting a mild abrasive with paper wrapped around it, and it takes a plain edge apart faster than anything else in normal life.
Serrations survive it for two reasons. The teeth concentrate force on a small contact area, so they start the cut instead of skating across the surface. And the valleys between them barely touch the material at all, so most of your edge length is not being worn down while you work. Industrial box-cutting blades have used the same geometry for decades, for exactly this reason.
The 5.0 keeps a plain edge too — the hatchet grind at the end of the card, sharpened knife-grade for clean cuts, food, and anything where a serration would tear rather than slice. Two edges, two jobs. The 3.0 had one. The 4.0 had none — only a semi-sharp hatchet corner, a scraper you can put an edge on with a stone.
06The Phillips
The single most requested feature across ten Kickstarter campaigns was a Phillips screwdriver. Not a bit — a Phillips cut into the card itself, always there. Which is fair: humanity has been tightening cross-head screws since 1936 and shows no sign of slowing down, and every flat-pack shelf on the planet ships with a bag of them and no tool.
It is a harder thing to machine than it sounds. A cruciform drive wants geometry in three dimensions: four flutes tapering to a point, angled so the driver seats in the recess instead of camming out. Getting that to grip a real screw from the edge of a 2 mm plate took the redesign of the entire edge and ten functions of card real estate.
The 5.0 has one.
07The one thing I never redesigned
There is a decision in this line that predates every generation and survived all of them: the modular slot.
Same slot, same click. A Pliers KIT bought for a 3.0 in 2021 drops into a 5.0 in 2026 — no shim, no spacer, no adapter. Three generations, one interface, and the only compounding thing in the catalogue: a KIT is worth more now than when you bought it, because it works on cards that did not exist at the time. Somewhere out there is a KIT from the 2021 campaign that has already outlived two generations of cards and is waiting, in a drawer, for a 5.0 it does not know about yet.
08So which generation is yours
The 4.0 remains the most functional card multitool anyone makes, and if your problem is airports, nothing else comes close. The 3.0 is the classic and it is still the right answer for a lot of people, which is a sentence I would not have written in 2022. The 5.0 is the one that came out of admitting the 4.0 solved the wrong problem for most of the people who bought it.
The 5.0 launches on Kickstarter in Fall 2026, and early backers get pricing that does not exist afterwards. The 4.0. Its base card carries no blade at all, which is why it is the one built to go through a checkpoint in your wallet — and the final word always stays with the officer. The 3.0 and the 5.0 both carry an edge on the plate, so they travel in checked baggage, together with any Cut Tool KIT taken out of a 4.0. The TSA article goes through the rules line by line.
Does a 3.0 KIT fit the 5.0? +
Yes. The modular slot has not changed since 2020: same slot, same click, across the 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0. Nothing to shim, nothing to adapt, and no rings in the mount — the insert is held by sprung tines machined out of the plate. A KIT bought for one generation keeps working on the ones that come after it.
Which one has the moon calendar? +
